America's Fear of Socialism
There is propaganda that prevents us in this country from understanding the nature of socialism. It reminds me of just a few decades ago when the word "liberal" became synonymous with "unpatriotic." We in this country think of ourselves as a righteous, benevolent, knowing entity distributing the seeds of democracy. In effect, we are promoting, not the political process of democracy, but the economic policies of capitalism.
Our health care system, our educational system and our judicial system are broken...as broken as the infrastructure of our roads and our antiquated tax structure.
We are in what I call an ethical lag. We are still believing in who we were post the Great Wars, but are not acknowledging to what extent we have become the military industrial complex that even Republicans reminded us to caution against over 60 years ago.
Susan White has this to say about the fear of socialism: "America not only needs more socialism, it needs an education about what socialism is and what it can do for it. But first, education in America needs a bath to wash away football and volleyball and “twirling” and the rest of the frivolous extracurricular activities from schools. Concentrate on learning. Be certain teachers have advanced degrees in their subjects before giving them tenure. And for Heaven’s sake, get one U.S standard of excellence toward which each and every child can strive so that by age eighteen a kid has a chance to make it through one of the top-rated, FREE universities.
The original Federalist and the original states' rights folks had an argument that was so equally convincing that those parties and those notions of government stayed around for centuries after they were promoted.
But what we have today in the great divide is sinister and no longer transparent. Therefore we seem to be moving toward a society of have or have not. The divide is larger as the decades move on because those in charge of moving money around, the Wall Street gang, are getting better and better at discovering loopholes to any regulation that is administered.Continued on the next page
