Breaking: Haitian Prime Minister Confirms 70,000 Bodies Recovered — So Far
CNN is reporting that all eighteen members of the Haitian Cabinet are alive, though many have lost family members. Now being housed at the police station, Cabinet members are gathered and planning to make a radio announcement to the people of Haiti later today.
During this report, Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive stated that they have recovered 70,000 bodies, and this, according to the PM, is a confirmed number. Obviously with so many buildings collapsed that number will increase over time, but we are given a frame of reference to put this tragedy in.
The PM also wanted to assure the people of Haiti that help is on its way, and praised them for their "relative calm" considering the conditions they have been forced to endure in the aftermath of last Tuesday's massive 7.0 earthquake.
Last week, the PM estimated that over 100,000 people died in the quake, and it would seem this initial estimate may still hold. Unbelievable.
Update: The number of dead now confirmed has been increased to 72,000 since this story was published.
