Collapse of Syria Imminent
President Bashar al-Assad's government in Syria appears ready for collapse. Syrian protesters have been on the march for 9 months, as his allies turn against the Syrian government.
The Arab League votes today to determine if Syria will stay in the state of expulsion from the regional group. The Syrian army has defectors who are trying to topple the military. The army defectors have reportedly killed 8 of their former army comrades so far today. On Monday, the army defecters reportedly killed 34 Syrian solders and security forces. Violence is spreading into the capital of the country, Damascus.
The formal decision to keep the Arab League's weekend decision to expel Syria will occur in Morocco today. The Arab League hopes that Mr. Assad ceases its violence and releases the protesting prisoners. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, 71 Syrians were killed yesterday.
Former Syrian ally, Turkey, has threatened to cut off electricity to Syria if the violence does not end soon. Moreover, Turkey has ended plans to explore for oil in Syria. The Turkish prime minister has said that Mr. Assad is a leader who feeds on the blood of its own people.
On Monday. the King of Jordan, Abdullah, spoke out publicly for Mr. Assad to resign. “I believe, if I were in his shoes, I would step down.”
With both internal and external forces aligned against the Syrian government, its collapse is imminent.
