GEICO Seeks Politically Agnostic Voice Actor
You may know the voice, but not the name, the face, or the political affiliation. But the name is D.C. Douglas, and despite his suggestive initials, he never really wanted to be entrenched in a political scuffle. But unfortunately an ill-advised voicemail put him square on the front lines.
Douglas, who did voice-over work as the end-of-the-ad narrator for those GEICO commercials, left a message to FreedomWorks wearing his tight sarcastic pants (loosely transcribed):
Hi there, I'm doing a paper about FreedomWorks and I was wondering ... I just have one more piece of information. I just need to know what the percentage is of people that are mentally retarded who work with the organization and who are members of it. So if you could give me a call back...
One final thing ... wondering what your plans are, how to spin it when one of your members actually does kill somebody. Wondering if you've got an actual PR spinning routine planned for that, or if you are going to take it when it happens ... Thank you very much.
His fatal flaw, other than startin' shit, was leaving his phone number on the voicemail, which FreedomWorks CEO Matt Kibbe was unable to delete when he shared the link on the conservative website Big Government ("An Andrew Breitbart Joint!"), along with GEICO's customer service hotline.
One thing led to another, yada yada yada, and Douglas was fired by GEICO. Turns out one call could cost you 15 percent or more of your dignity.
This is what happens when one hikes through a rattlesnake pit carrying a backpack full of rat carcasses. It's not gonna end well.
