GOP Tips it Hand, Shows Anti-Job Agenda - Page 3
Which means... THE DEBT CEILING IS UNCONSTITUTIONAL!!!
This would put the Teabagging Republicans in the uncomfortable position of arguing AGAINST the Constitution they so dearly love, even those whose knowledge of the document ends after the words, "We the People...."
By declaring the debt ceiling unconstitutional, the White House could continue to meet its financial obligations, leaving Tea Party-backed Republicans in the difficult position of arguing against the plain wording of the Constitution. Bipartisan negotiators are debating the size of the cuts, now in the trillions, that will come along with raising the debt ceiling.
Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.), head of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, said that the constitutional solution puts the question in its proper context — that the debate is over paying past debts, not over future spending.
"The way everybody talks about this is that we need to raise the debt ceiling. What we're really saying is, 'We have to pay our bills,'" Murray said. The 14th Amendment approach is "fascinating," she added.
As of this moment, negotiators are discussing trillions of dollars in cuts to federal spending — the kind of spending REPUBLICANS want to cut. Republicans refuse to even DISCUSS increasing revenue by the most innocuous means, such as ending subsidies to Big Oil, imposing tax penalties on companies that ship jobs overseas, revenue increases that have WIDE support in the polls. They are doing their best to ensure that the debt ceiling is shattered, thus beginning a worldwide economic crisis they can blame on Obama.
Suppose for a moment... just suppose that Obama had the temerity to show up, uninvited, to the next negotiating session. Suppose he said...
"Fellas, I've been giving this a great deal of thought. And yes, there are a lot of cuts to be made. I will make whatever cuts I legally can by executive order. I will do that as soon as this meeting is over. My staff is drafting the orders right now, preparing them for my signature. Those are the only cuts you're going to get. Now, as far as your attempt to hold the American people and the international economy hostage in order to please your corporate masters... who do you idiots work for? The American People? Or Dr. Evil from the Austin Powers movies? Guess what, boys and gals. That debt ceiling thing you're debating? Fuhgeddabout it. It's unconstitutional. We will CONTINUE to pay our bills just like the 14th Amendment says we will. Of course, if you want to go out there and tell the American people that the Constitution is WRONG, that's your prerogative. Of course, you can try to stop me. You can take this to the Supreme Court if you want to. But you would have to show that, as a legislative body, you have been injured by this action. You would have to pass a joint resolution showing that I have usurped your power. That means, it would have to be passed by the House AND Senate. And unfortunately, there just doesn't seem to be enough of you teabagging assholes in the Senate to get such a resolution passed. So. Let's get serious. I'll give you two weeks. I want legislation on my desk with REASONABLE spending cuts, SIGNIFICANT increases in revenues. Your rich buddies can afford to help out a little. If you don't get it right, I'll veto it and send you back over and over and over again until you get it right. Now get busy. Let's make some jobs. I have some executive orders to sign."Continued on the next page
