How Did The Debt Talk Collapse?
No American President has been insulted by the #2 in line to his job as Obama has been—has the President learned anything?
The lesson is plain and simple: No one respects a doormat. Time and again President Obama has allowed the Republicans to walk all over him. Time and again they have exacted pound of flesh from him. And now they don't even think of him as worthy of getting his phone call returned!
The GOP played the good cop bad cop routine so successfully. Eric Cantor was the bad cop who had only learned one word—no—and has not graduated to the other opposite—yes. John Boehner on the other hand was Obama's pal, ever willing with a sympathetic ear to listen to his cries. But on Thursday, he too changed; late on that day Obama called him, regardless, the House Speaker never returned the call.
As Thursday turned into Friday and no call came in from the Speaker, the White House aides got anxious. Never has it taken so long for the president to get his phone calls returned from John Boehner. What's going on?
Notwithstanding, the White House had to wait; morning turned into noon, and noon into afternoon, and then at 3:30 P.M. a call came in, the message was: Expect a call from Boehner in two hours. The President demanded, how about right now? The response was, not now, the speaker is not available at the moment.
Why was Boehner not willing to talk with the President? According to him, he realized that Obama was hell bent on forcing him to eat the awful t-word—there is no other three letter words in English, like—TAX—that the Republicans hate so much. Well, cuts in benefits are also tax, albeit, that tax is on the poor people, which is absolutely acceptable to them, Obama nonetheless were talking of cutting tax loopholes on the rich corporations. Oh my goodness!
