John McCain Maverickly Abandons Maverick Nomenclature
Here's an insane find by the Washington Monthly in a recent Newsweek profile of Senator John McCain, whose degenerative run for the White House in '08 was gloriously chronicled to the point that, at some point, nothing would surprise citizens what else went wrong.
How about that whole "maverick" mantra? What'd you think about that, Senator?
"I never considered myself a maverick ... I consider myself a person who serves the people of Arizona to the best of his abilities."
Well, that's a rather tough facade to maintain. No wonder it didn't work.
As if this is a surprise to anyone, a large reason that McCain lost that race is — aside from Obama's grassroots movement — that he wasn't the John McCain who became beloved by his own base and many Democrats. He may have been a war hero and a straight shooter, but he let the Republican machine operate his campaign, and even if he disagreed with the details of his own election run, he condoned them and as a result wasted his best opportunity to become president. That's not a maverick; that's a goose.
