Limbaugh's 'Slut' Comment Not Dying Anytime Soon
American people are often blamed for having a very short attention span, but that preconceived notion may not always be true—at least the Republican Party’s spiritual guru, Rush Limbaugh is finding that out the hard way.
It has been almost two weeks since Limbaugh called law student Sandra Fluke a "slut,", and the story has still not become yesterday’s news, unthinkable in the Internet age. ABC News has now confirmed that some major companies such as Geico and JC Penneys have issued recent statements saying that their ads were not specifically bought during Limbaugh's time slot, and were mistakenly run there. This can be interpreted as: “Don’t run our ads during Limbaugh’s show.”
Premiere Networks, the radio group that syndicates the Rush Limbaugh Radio Show, issued a memo last week indicating that the number of companies that have requested that their ads not be run during Rush’s programs are now in three figures; however, to them it is “likely to stir negative sentiment from a very small percentage of the listening public."
MoveOn.org, the progressive activist group, released a web video on Tuesday featuring Limbaugh and stating that the Republicans were waging a “war on women.” A woman’s voice announced in the ad, “Judging from their comments, the GOP must have a serious problem with women. And until the Republicans get over their issues, we women have got a serious problem with the Republican Party.”
Die-hard Republican leaning businesses, however, could care less. Premiere Networks declared that there are companies such as LifeLock and Lear Financial who have publicly said that they would not pull their ads from Limbaugh's show. Of course, the GOP supporters have every right to do what they think is in their best interest, and the progressives will ponder on what's is in their best interest. The fact remains nonetheless, that certain things are taboo in a civilized society, such as calling a decent woman a “slut” and “prostitute”. When that happens everyone needs to condemn it, irrespective of their political affiliation.
