Merry Christmas; it's an Obamination!
I feel exhausted just thinking about the 8 dozen cookies that I baked, the presents that I wrapped, and the return of my daughter from college.
It’s funny how quiet has become the norm in our home. Now it’s full of excitement as I watch my daughter bound into the house, eyes trained on the refrigerator, looking for special “Mommy Made” treats to satisfy her snack urge.
This is by no means a complaint! I am grateful for my daughter and all the energy she has brought and will bring into my life.
However, joy and peace are becoming extremely hard to come by these days with the disaster that is our nation’s economy sucking the life out of young and old alike. The warm feelings and anticipation from childhood have been replaced by stress.
Once upon a time in America, our people were happy and weren’t obsessed with the material. Family and community took precedent over IPods and Nikes. I’m not really sure when it all started to go wrong, but the gas crisis in the seventies jumps to mind.
Sister Clarita was my science teacher. Silly me figured I would ask the good sister how all the oil could possibly be gone. It’s fossil fuel, constantly being made deep in the earth. Time, pressure, and decay ensured we could not have possibly used up all the oil. Sister Clarita took issue with my blatant rejection of our government’s explanation and slapped me across the face.
The irony in that incident is, flash forward to the present, and there’s plenty of oil floating in the Gulf of Mexico. The oil that doesn’t sink will be forced to the ocean floor exterminating everything that it coats; the greasy remains of dinosaurs suffocating the future. Who should we thank for the destruction? Why the greedy corporate entities living obscene lives of excess at the expense of hard working people.
Where is the America we were promised?
The real heartbreaker is that I sold the “work hard and you’ll be rewarded” lies lock, stock, and barrel to my child. The cold, hard reality is that most of her hard-earned money will be misused to fund grants for “Space Elevators.”
Enjoy the Holidays!
