New President Calls for End of Materialism and Selfishness?
It's no joke. The new President did call for the end of materialism and selfishness that drove the country to ruin. However, it's not the President of the United States, but the President-elect of Ireland.
The soon-to-be Irish President won the election with a million votes. He condemned the Celtic Tiger years, but told the Irish people in essence that they need to forgive the wrongdoers.
“We leave behind a narrow individualism that valued the person for what was assumed to be their accumulated wealth but neglected the connection between the person, the social, the community and the nation” is only part of what Mr. Michael D. Higgins, the President-elect said. “I recognize the righteous anger but I also saw the need for healing and to move past recrimination” is what he told the assembly at Dublin Castle. This 70-year old man will take office on November 11th when he returns to Dublin Castle.
Would it not be more grand if our New President, whomever it may be, would call for an end of Materialism and Selfishness in the United States of America? But alas, I do not see one candidate for any party or any ticket calling for the things this man called for in Ireland.
