Palin Trademarking Her Name; Smart Business Decision or Narcissism?
Apparently the Palin Mom and Daughter duo applied for trademarks for their names. Do you find this narcissistic or smart business? Personally, I am leaning toward smart business.
Did you know that Bristol Palin makes $15,000 to $30,000 per speech to talk about getting knocked up as a teenager? I can't decide if I think that's crazy or genius. I suppose ultimately I'm jealous. I'm pretty sure no one is going to pay me that kind of money to talk about getting pregnant at 27. I'm not turning it down if you want to though! Anyone?
Regardless if you like her or don't, it is clear that a distinct image comes to mind when you hear or read the name Sarah Palin. For some, it is a negative image. For others, it is an image of what they want to aspire to. Whichever side you are on, there is a pretty distinct brand developing around Sarah Palin. I can't hear or say "You Betcha!" or "Put some lipstick on that pig."without her immediately coming to mind.
A trademark is simply a formal means to claim a brand that you have developed. Ultimately its power is that it gives you the ability to argue infringement if someone uses the brand you've developed.
The term trademark is also used informally to refer to any distinguishing attribute by which an individual is readily identified...
A personal brand is everything about YOU after all. And what defines YOU quite so well as your name.
Ultimately, I think Sarah and Bristol Palin are making a smart business move with this trademark. What about you?
