Pro-Lifers Give Thumbs Down to Life Saving Breast Exams

In an article from the AP we have learned that the Susan G. Komen for the Cure charity has announced they will cease offering funding to Planned Parenthood.
Pro-lifers think this is wonderful. They think this is amazing news.
The funding that this specific charity has given Planned Parenthood has gone solely to help them administer breast exams. It is projected that the funding has paid for over 170,000 of the four million breast exams that Planned Parenthood has performed in the last five years.
It is a little surprising that organizations that stand up for the sanctity of life are cheering this move which will deny cancer screening to tens of thousands of poor and disadvantaged women. The biggest blow is not to Planned Parenthood, but rather women across America.
Rarely will pro-lifers stop to consider how many abortions have been prevented because Planned Parenthood also offers access to adoption services or how many babies have survived because poor and disadvantaged women have had low cost or free access to screenings and other services to promote the health of the mother while pregnant.
Of course mothers who plan their pregnancies and accept responsibility do not need to make a decision regarding the termination of a pregnancy. The free or low cost access to birth control that Planned Parenthood offers has prevented far more abortions than conservative efforts to elect a Republican President ever have.
The problem for people who stand up for the vast amount of health services that Planned Parenthood offers is that you cannot quantify the number of pregnancies that have been saved or abortions prevented by Planned Parenthood. The fact that it is impossible to provide these numbers allows pro-life organizations to suggest that this is a win in their war against abortion.
Cheering this decision by the Susan G. Komen organization might make many feel better about themselves, but thousands of women will suffer and that is nothing to be happy about. This move does absolutely nothing to prevent even one abortion from occurring, but it does mean that some will unnecessarily die from undiagnosed cancer.
Way to go!
