In an MSNBC interview before the election Giffords must have had a precognition of things to come when she said “We’re on Sarah Palin’s targeted list, depicted in the crosshairs of a gun sight over our district, when people do that, they have to realize there are consequences to that action.”
And back to Eminem. His new film, as I researched it, is about overcoming odds and not falling back into old patterns; if this is the story line, good for him. However, would a more inviting, less overly stimulating title put fewer butts in movie theater seats? If the film is called maybe, “Against All Odds” or something like that, would it keep fans away if the acting is good and the story transformational?
We are raising our children in an environment that is hostile and lacking in civility. The profanity and need to live in the extremes of “for” or “against” is so useless in a global world with shrinking resources. The stress is overwhelming! And we know from neuro-psychology that stress, especially in young, forming brains undermines healthy development; corpus callosum abnormalities if you want to check out the science.
I teach how to “practice safe stress”, middle ground between “zombieville” where addictions and medications dull senses, and “freakoutville” where big drama wins. In this middle place we can untie the “nots” of old patterns, the “am not, cannot, not good enough, and not like me”.
Once we come face to face with our fears, the patterns of the past that keep us stalled we have the opportunity to move to the neo-cortex which is where altruism and caring reside. It’s what the world needs now!
