Rare #TWITTERFAIL for The Onion - Page 2
Now the argument seems to be between the people who think ANY joking about such a thing is just plain not funny, and those who think the people in the other group are overreacting.
Other than the fact that this has been a RED LETTER DAY for the Onion's site traffic, much of the controversy could have been avoided and we all would have had just as much fun if the Onion had opened with its SECOND tweet on the subject.
See, even the DIMMEST reader (and I'm looking at YOU, Mikey) would have to recognize THAT as satire! Now, since the crisis began we've learned that the Congressmen are demanding $12 trillion in ransom "or all the kids die," Rep. Trent Frank shot at a helicopter, there's the obligatory reporting that those who know "congress" say it's "seemed desperate" lately, one of the hostages — a child with asthma — has been released as a sign of "good will", and that child reports the situation inside the Capitol as "very scary" with the lawmakers arguing over how much of the ransom will go to each state.
Now that's satire! The good stuff.
I just submit that they could have saved themselves what I fear will be a public relations kerfuffle if they'd have just started with their SECOND tweet instead of the first. As a result, the story won't be about the brilliant satire of Congress holding Children Hostage (as they are doing, metaphorically if not physically). The story will be about those bad people at the Onion SCARING the numbskulls.
And that's too bad.
