Really, Just How Ignorant are Americans?
In an imaginary Republican assembly of 100 Americans, I said, “The billionaires, mega-millionaires, and cradle-to-grave guaranteed pampered citizens of the USA please step out of the room.” When only one person walked out I looked at the other 99, and said, “What are you doing here brothers and sisters? You are in the wrong place.”
I have often asked myself the question, at this precipitous moment, when such a vast number of people are increasingly being pushed into a life of misery, how is it even possible that the GOP dreams of winning both Houses on next Tuesday?
In a way I knew the answer; scholars such as Thomas Hartmann and many others like him have written volumes, and even the net is now flooded with information that any intelligent person shall be able to read and analyze and come to the right conclusion — the corporate media control political power using the GOP and a significant number of Democratic law makers.
Then I saw Rick Shenkman’s Ignorant America: Just How Stupid Are We? and thought that I would ask my readers to spend a few moments reading Shenkman’s article. A 2004 study by National Endowment for the Arts revealed that just 43% of young people between the ages of 18 and 24 read literature, a 17% reduction from a study that was done in 1982.
A 2005 Pew Research Center study found that 77% of Americans get news from TV, and news on TV is controlled by corporate media for their own vested interest. On top of that, Americans are not interested in political and general knowledge. A very small percentage of Americans are well-versed in political knowledge, 50% to 60% have cursory knowledge, and the rest know next to nothing.Continued on the next page
