Really, Just How Ignorant are Americans? - Page 2
Shenkman quotes Delli Carpini and Keeter to state that 5% of Americans have good knowledge of economics, 11% have a grasp of domestic issues, 14% are OK with foreign affairs, and only 10% are good with geography. About 20% of young Americans between the ages 18 and 34 read newspapers, and do not watch network news either, only 11% say that they check news on the web.
Americans are so ignorant about their own political system that 34% are unaware that only Congress has the authority to declare war, only 35% know that Congress can override a presidential veto and 60% believe that President can appoint judges to federal courts without approval from the Senate.
The collective ignorance of American populace was so well demonstrated by President George W. Bush when he could not name who the president of Pakistan was. This is an ominous sign, for democracy cannot work in vacuum; it requires educated mass to function properly.
