Republican Rick Santorum Gets a Second Look
Christian conservative leaders from Iowa give Rick Santorum the second look and a nod. On Tuesday, the candidate for the Republican nomination for President got the backing of socially conservative leaders in Iowa, Bob Vander Plaats. Mr. Santorum is a former Senator from Pennsylvania and was called, “the Huckabee in this race.”
Mr. Vander Plaats said that he “saw him as a champion for the family in the U.S. House.” Moreover, he “saw him as a champion for the family in the U.S. Senate.” And he “saw him as a champion for the family on the campaign trail.” Mr. Vander Plaats sees Rick Santorum as coming “from us, not to us.” Vander Plaats is the head of the Family Leader, which has not endorsed a candidate before this campaign, but said they would in this election. Then, they backed out on any endorsement.
Chuck Hurley, who is the head of the Iowa Family Policy Center, a part of the Family Leader, also endorsed Santorum outside the organization. Mr. Hurley told reporters that Mr. Santorum “exceeds the biblical qualifications.” Mr. Hurley ended his press conferences telling Iowa caucus-goers “to take a close look at Rick, to study the scripture, to pray hard and vote their conscience. Above all, we answer to God for our vote.”
