Robert Gibbs Pisses Off Liberals; Liberals Whine
In an interview with "The Hill" newspaper, the White House Press secretary pissed off some liberal Democrats when he suggested that some of them should be "drug tested." He made this comment in response to some liberals likening some of Obama's policies to those of former President George W. Bush. It's unclear what exact policies the "professional left" (as Gibbs called them) were comparing in such a way, but it was most likely in relation to health care policies.
Gibbs stuck to his comments, not backing down when questioned on them the next day. In fact, he even got a little snarky: "Many times I could have said thing slightly differently." But, he added with a chuckle, "There's no truth to the rumor that I've added an inflatable exit to my office." This was in reference to JetBlue flight attendant Steven Slater, of course. At least Gibbs stays up on current events. Well, wait - that's his job.
When asked if he'd put his foot in his mouth, Gibbs responded, "I think I have both my feet firmly planted on the floor and nothing in my mouth to speak of."
Gibbs elaborated a bit saying that some of those critical of Obama wouldn't be happy even if the Pentagon was no longer in existence, we had Canadian style health care and anti-war congressmen Dennis Kucinich were president.
Gibbs clearly enjoys his job, because every day he gets up in front of the podium and delivers the news from the White House to the press corps. Every once in a while, he gets to crack on some liberals. Gibbs has the distinction of not being a senator, congressman or any other elected official. He doesn't have to kiss ass, he doesn't have to toe party lines.
One liberal Democrat, Minnesota's Keith Ellison, suggested Gibbs resign. React much? It was a gaffe, perhaps. Or perhaps Ellison needs a clear cup and some privacy.
