Ron Paul: The New Ricardo Montalban

Opting out is a big Libertarian meme. PayPal founder Peter Thiel is apparently big on seasteading. Like many Ron Paul supporters, Thiel resents being asked to participate in society. So much so, in fact, that he’d rather take his ball and go home to his man-made island. Unknown at this time whether there will be a scheduled ferry to Dr. Moreau’s place.

Resenting taxation is another Libertarian battle cry. Check out this comment I received from a Ron Paulian: “Why don't you address your underlying do-gooder position that there is a right for one person to another person's earnings?” Stupid do-gooders, always wanting me to contribute to the society I live in. I’m gonna go live on my island and have ice cream for breakfast every single day and you can’t stop me! So much mental illness, so little time.

I agree that Libertarians should be able to live in a world free of government meddling. They deserve to be free of oppressive building codes that prevent your house from collapsing. No totalitarian bleeding heart liberal should ever force another person to live anywhere near a hospital.

There already are some Libertopian countries, places with very small government, no taxation, no public schools, no socialized medicine, no minimum wage, and no code enforcement of any kind. I'm not sure why they don't all just move there. Somalia and Afghanistan both fit the bill.

Who knows, maybe they really enjoyed every episode of Gilligan. Or they love coconuts. They’re going to have to, because there won’t be any taxpayer-funded highways with which to bring food in.

Years ago I had a conversation with a Ron Paul-loving firefighter from Texas, he was the first person to lay this mindset out for me. “Why should we pay for everybody else?” he asked. It occurred to me that Texas should secede, by all means. We’ll stimulate their economy by liberating them from NASA and Fort Hood. The Republic of Texas Space Program should be the most impressive combination of armadillos and firecrackers ever imagined. Austin could be like the Vatican, with a skyway connecting it to the rest of reality. Tariffs, hm...

But I have to admit, the island is the best idea yet. I will gladly pay for them to go there, on the condition that they all go, and they don’t come back.
