Rush Limbaugh and The Deafening Silence From the Republican Party
Members of the Republican Party are quick to jump on those who don’t believe as they do. Unfortunately, they’re not so quick to jump on someone within his or her own party. Rush Limbaugh has been in the news lately because of his incendiary comments about a Georgetown University law student. Limbaugh says something strange or ridiculous on a consistent basis but his latest statement is way out of line.
Sandra Fluke was to testify before the House Oversight Committee on contraceptives but was denied. Chairman Darrell Issa (R-CA) said Ms. Fluke couldn’t testify because the hearing was not about contraceptives but religious freedom. So instead, he called five men to testify about how the president is waging war on religion by mandating religious businesses pay for contraceptives if they offer health insurance. President Obama later changed it to say insurers will pay for it.
Democrats later held an unofficial committee meeting to allow Ms. Fluke to make her statement. She spoke about women need contraceptives for other things besides preventing pregnancy like preserving fertility and shrinking ovarian cysts. Limbaugh, in response to Ms. Fluke speaking before the committee said, “What does it say about the college co-ed Susan Fluke (sic) who goes before a congressional committee and essentially says that she must be paid to have sex — what does that make her? It makes her a slut, right? It makes her a prostitute.”
He also says if Ms. Fluke wants contraceptives and others to pay for it, when she has sex she should make a sex tape and upload it for all to see. Limbaugh lost a sponsor on his radio show but he’s going full steam ahead. Limbaugh says what he said is not so bad and the liberal media is hyping the issue. As usual, he’s not taking responsibility for his words; it’s other people’s fault.Continued on the next page
