The Choice Is Yours, Mr. President
The music will stop, lights will fade, and all aficionados will leave, as they eventually do.
Then the president of this great nation will be alone, looking up at the stars on a dark night. On such a night I wish he will read this open letter.
President, you made history twice. Many said a black man will never be in the White House, at least not yet, the nation is not ready. Then they said, there is so much hate in the air that it will eventually consume him, he will never be reelected, but the naysayers were proved wrong. Because this nation, the true melting pot of civilization in our time, is the very best place where people can overcome race, religion and every other barrier and truly become a nation. But I want to tell you president, it’s not really your credit alone that you made this history; you made history despite your shortcomings.
Blacks and the Hispanics might have voted for you overwhelmingly, but you wouldn’t be elected without white votes. Bill Press, Ed Schultz, Thom Hartmann, Norman Goldman—all middle aged white men have made their voices hoarse making the case for you, and America voted for you.
Your reelection proved that this nation is not done yet, it is not yet time for its people to rest, and hand over the baton to others. There is so much energy in this young nation that the seemingly insurmountable problems are only going to be minor humps, nothing more. But only if you do the job that the people have entrusted you with.
Your followers’ heap praise on you, notwithstanding, you have a pretty unimpressive record in your first term; the Republican controlled House and filibuster loving Senate thwarted your every major move, stopping you from larger achievements. In the just concluded election—only about two dozen moneyed men wanted to buy this country and dump you in the history book, with the combined power of their wealth, but people of this nation are not yet ready to be pushed over, they fought for you. They banded together to save the nation from evil, and renewed faith in you to hold this divided nation together and steer it in the right direction.Continued on the next page
