The Mayor "Rahmbodize's" Chicago Teachers
The Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) took a vote on a call to strike and 98 percent of its members voted in favor—in a state that is totally controlled by the Democrats. The man waging war on the CTU is none other than Obama’s former chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, and he still maintains close relationship with the President.
Until last week Emanuel served as the co-chair of the president’s national campaign, and now he has taken over the duty to direct campaign fund raising activity of president’s super PAC, Priorities USA Action.
An all out war on teachers could be expected from Rick Scott, Chris Christie and other host of Scotts—but Rahm Emanuel? A bleeding heart Democrat? What gives?
What gives is the truth that if Republicans are the enemy of ordinary people, the Democrats are no friends either. As I said the other day, if GOP wants to put common people on direct fire, the Donkey-party wants to place them in slow cooker.
In the name of school reform, the Chicago Public School administrators imposed a merit-based pay system for teachers, founded on standardized testing. They also created privately run charter schools staffed by non-union teachers and stole public money to fund the chartered schools while progressively defunding public schools.
Many public schools have conditions only fitting for third world countries. One teacher often struggles in sweltering heats to manage over fifty fifth-grade students, since the rooms are not even air-conditioned. Many schools lack even basic amenities, forget well-equipped labs. Many teachers buy school supplies with their own money because so many students come from homes where parents have to choose between meal and school supplies. Many teachers work ten, twelve, thirteen hours-days just to cope up with extra classes, coaching, and grading papers. If it is not for their intense love of what they do, many teachers would leave their profession.
