The Over-Reach of Compromise - Page 2
While President is holding out an Olive branch, the Republicans are plotting to stagnate the government simply to win the 2012 election. The old Karl Rove approach is working. Let's do nothing while the Democrats are in office so they will look eminently stupid then we can capture the three roles of government and push through what ever we want.
Did the Republican sit on their hands in the field when Bush was pushing through tax cuts, or invading Iraq when the war was in Afghanistan. Did Reagan have a problem selling arm to Iraq in order to fund a war a war with the Sandinistas in Central America.. Did Bush the second have any trouble landing on the deck of a carrier in front of a banner reading "Mission Accomplished" while wearing a flight suit? Does the American electorate have any memory or have we all swallowed the Kool-Aid?
We can read, we can go to any number of sites, or listen to any number of reports that take up the debate about extending the tax-cuts to America's wealthiest, but what we are not reading about is why the Democrats cave on everything from closing the base in Cuba, to the AT&T scandal about turning name of Americans over to the CIA, to tax cuts, to the worst of the lot in my mind:
Why on earth did we not let the Republicans Filibuster until their collective throats were dry? We could have let the entire electorate see that the Republican Congress was being nothing but obstructionist.
I think that wisdom and hindsight ought to have taught us that as Progressives the Democrat party needs to get a spine. Dove's in war time may make a clear stand on something like pre-emptive aggression, but to let the hawks fly off with the entire progressive agenda is nothing more than spineless.
