In 1995, Mary Kay Letourneau’s admission of having a sexual relationship with an underage high school student in her class shocked the country. Letourneau gave birth to two of the student’s children while she was in prison and married him upon her release. In 2006, another case hit the headlines. Debra Lafave was accused of having sex with her 14 year old student on several instances. In 2004, she was charged with lewd and lascivious battery and at her hearing in 2006 was sentenced to three years on house arrest and seven years on probation. Since these stories have come out, more students, parents, and educators have become aware of  sexual harassment prevention on school grounds.

Recently, English teacher Brittni Colleps was accused of having a sexual relationship with five of her students, none of whom were minors. Colleps was a married mother to three children at the time of her offenses. Though the boys were over the age of 18, the state of Texas prohibits teachers and students from having these relationships. The students alleged that Colleps had been sending theme explicit text messages, and made a cell phone video in which she engaged in intercourse with several students. She was found guilty of each count against her and is facing five years in prison.

In November of 2012, a Community Christian Academy teacher named Amie Neely was discovered to be having sex with a 16 year old student in a parking lot. Her husband made the discovery. The student had been staying with the couple until the discovery, upon at which time he was kicked out and told the neighbors what had happened. Neely was arrested and released on bond and awaits trial.

In July of 2012, a judge scheduled the trial of a Modesto, Calif. high school teacher accused of having a sexual relationship with a teenage student 14 years earlier. The scandal does not stop there, however. The business teacher, James Hooker, was married with three daughters when he left them and quit his job. He moved in with an 18 year old former student, and announced their relationship in the local newspaper and on television. The student’s mother reported the relationship, though police could do nothing when the girl told them the relationship did not begin until she graduated.

While police are becoming more aware of the incidents that go on in high schools, parents and students are advised to report any and all instances of sexual harassment at school.
