The Tragedy of 9/11/01 — in Perspective - Page 2
"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
OK. Let's set that aside for a moment.
Were you aware that since 9/11, 113,403 people have been killed, in America, as a result of drunk driving? That's almost 39 percent of all traffic fatalities from 2002-2008, the last year for which figures are available. Yes, increased enforcement of drunk driving laws are starting to show results, with the number of drunk driving deaths down from 17,524 in 2002 to 13,846 in 2008. So, who do we invade, who's rights shall we violate, which minority group shall we subjugate to punish SOMEBODY for these 113,403 unnecessary deaths? Where is THEIR memorial?
OK, now let's put THAT aside.
Were you aware that according to the CDC, 443,000 people die every year as a direct result of tobacco? That means, if averages held up, 3,987,000 Americans who were alive on 9/11 are dead now as a direct result of tobacco. 49,000 each year, a total of 588,000 between 2002 and 2010, are dead as a result of second-hand smoke. But yet tobacco remains legal. If you're over 18 (and let's face it — THAT's an easy hurdle to overcome), smoke 'em if you've got 'em. Who do we attack? Where do we send our soldiers so they can be killed? Which religion shall we demonize? Where's the memorial for the nearly 4 million victims of tobacco since 9/11?
Let's see these figures side by side.
Killed on 9/11 — 2,752
Troops Killed in Afghanistan and Iraq — 6,226 (so far)
Americans Killed by Drunk Driving since 9/11 — 113,403
Americans Killed by Gun Violence since 9/11 — 214,354
Americans Killed by Tobacco since 9/11 — 3,987,000
So, one can legitimately wonder WHY all the cable news networks are devoting wall-to-wall coverage of the 10th anniversary of the aforementioned horrible, bad, terrible event while ignoring the deaths of the hundreds of thousands and millions killed by things that if you tried to outlaw, conservative heads would explode in a shower of blood, bone and tiny little bits of brain?Continued on the next page
