U.S. House Votes to Defund Planned Parenthood
The U.S. House voted Friday night and passed an amendment to defund Planned Parenthood. Eleven Democrats voted for and seven Republicans voted against. One Republican voted present.
Before the vote began Democratic Rep. Jackie Speier gave an emotional speech of her own personal experience of having an abortion at seventeen weeks. She said, "Planned Parenthood has a right to operate. Planned Parenthood has a right to provide services for family planning. Planned Parenthood has a right to offer abortions. Last time I checked, abortions were legal in this country." - Elise Foley, Huffington Post
The House will still have to vote on the budget later this month which will include the amendment. Even though this seems to be a small victory for anti-abortion activist it could still be overturned. Part of the problem pro-choice activists have with the amendment is that Planned Parenthood not only provided abortions but they also provided access to medical exams and counseling as well as contraception. Pro-choice advocates feel that this is a vendetta against Planned Parenthood by conservatives and Tea Party goers.
When looking at what the savings would be from this amendment on the budget it is shocking. The measure would eliminate about $330 million through the end of September. Most would argue that Planned Parenthood already doesn't spend federal funds on abortions so the only funds taken would be the ones that help with birth control, cancer screening and other health service. Speier also feels that we should be looking at how to cut the budget other ways and how to create jobs instead of taking away a woman's right to choose.
1.Unintended pregnancy accounts for almost half of all pregnancies
2.Four out of ten unintended pregnancies end in abortion
3.Out of the total number of pregnancies, 24% end in abortion
4.Woman who have never been married account for 2/3rds of all abortions
These are just some of the facts you can find on the internet and to be quite honest they are all different one way or another. They each show what they want you so see and it all really comes down to your own personal belief.
