Imagine if you will...

It's the height of the presidential campaign. Barack Obama, a promising young African-American candidate, is being lambasted by the media because his minister said some clearly inappropriate things. Then, the media turns on him AGAIN because of a rumor... a RUMOR... that his WIFE said something...

The rumor that Michelle Obama railed against "whitey" in a diatribe at Chicago's Trinity United Church of Christ has circulated on conservative Republican blogs for weeks and was repeated by radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh. The rumor included claims of a videotape of the speech that would be used to bring down Obama's candidacy this fall.

"No such tape exists," the campaign responds on the site, http://www.fightthesmears.com. "Michelle Obama has not spoken from the pulpit at Trinity and has not used that word."

For weeks and weeks and weeks and weeks RWNJ commentators jabbered and gibbered about Racist Michelle and Racist Barack and their Racist Pastor because of some tape somewhere in which Michelle said the word "Whitey."

AND NO TAPE EVER SURFACED!  But even now...RWNJ snot rags like World Net Daily (I won't honor them with a link, you can check it for yourself on the Google) said on May 31 — 2011, not 2008...

A tape that was reportedly filmed in 2004 during the Rainbow/Push Coalition Conference at Jeremiah Wright's Trinity United Church has mysteriously disappeared from public view. The tape allegedly showed Michelle Obama hysterically ranting about "Whiteys" and savagely attacking Bill Clinton as responsible for African genocide. The wife of Louis Farrakhan was one of the honored guests.

Media Matters offers this suggestion, BTW:

WND "columnist" Mychal Massie seems not to have considered the possibility that the purported tape has “mysteriously disappeared” because it never existed in the first place. Even conservative blogger Michelle Malkin noted that the purported tape was being hyped by “buffoons” whose claims about it were constantly shifting.

So... for years, RWNJ's have been foaming and babbling about a tape that never existed...

Suppose, for a moment, a tape existed where Michelle Obama referred to white people as "barbarians" who should be "disciplined" and "educated".  You wouldn't even have to turn your TV or computer on to hear the screaming from the Right Wing!  You'd hear it in your SLEEP, transmitted through the AIR WAVES, caught by the fillings in your teeth and broadcast into your brain.  Every half hour on the half hour would be a new story with a new revelation about how a presidential candidate, a BLACK one at that, has a racist wife who thinks white people are "barbarians."  And not JUST the right wing propaganda organs like Fox, but CNN and MSNBC would be covering it even MORE!  They'd be using it for RATINGS!  Pundits of all stripes would be clucking their tongues in disgust at such an injudicious use of words to describe a whole subset of the population.  Someone who said such a thing would NATURALLY be called a racist, would RIGHTFULLY be called a racist.
