Dr. Michael Bachmann is president of Bachmann & Associates, a Christian counselling firm based in Lake Elmo and Burnsville - two cities around 30 miles apart in Minnesota.
He has been a clinical therapist for more than 20 years after studying at Winona State University in Minnesota, Regent University in Virginia and Union Institute and University in Ohio.
The couple have been a tight unit ever since bonding over their Christian faith and political opinions at college - and Dr Bachmann has previously described himself as his wife’s ‘strategist’.
They have raised five children and 23 foster children together. GOP veteran Ron Carey told The Daily Beast that the only two people she talks to as insiders are Dr Bachmann and her son Lucas.
Dr Bachmann describes his ‘personal mission statement’ as follows: ‘I believe my call is to minister to the needs of people in a practical, effective, and sensitive way. Christ is the Almighty Counsellor.’
He holds particularly strong views on homosexuality and has previously said ‘barbarians’ need to be ‘disciplined’, ‘educated’ and people in authority should ‘not encourage such thoughts and feelings’.
The comments made in a radio interview come despite his statement to a newspaper that if a gay person comes to his clinic ‘and they want to stay homosexual, I don’t have a problem with that’.
His views came before his wife’s statement in a Fox News interview earlier this week, saying she believes in constitutional amendments to see marriage between a man and a woman only.
