Congressman Todd Akin’s ridiculous quote about “women being able to shut that whole thing down” with regard to pregnancy after rape has been hurting my head for a week. Certainly more erudite people than I have come forward to comment. Actually, I just read a Twitter post by David Weinberger, retweeted by Jeff Jarvis, that said, “Todd Akin sits on the House Science Committee. Which answers the question: Can I laugh and scream at the same time?” That pretty much sums it up for me.

But aside from insult and ignorance, and not even related to politics, the idea that women are still shrouded in myth and mystery is a powerful premise that probably should be harnessed. With that kind of leverage, shouldn’t women use it to reverse the injustices that have been foisted on them?

Where did Mr. Akin’s education go wrong? Did he never do an egg-to-embryo project in school? Did he never attend a health class? Where were his parents when his assumptions were being formulated? Didn’t a buddy ever take him aside and say, “Well, Todd, actually, that’s not how it works?”
