BREAKING NEWS: Democrats win again in a Republican stronghold
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/ washington/ 2008/ 05/ breaking-news-d.html
Forget West Virginia. The election that pros in both parties were watching tonight was a special House faceoff in Mississippi -- and the results could not be worse for the GOP. For the third time during the last few months, a Democrat triumphed in a House district that long had been solidly Republican. In this case -- Mississippi's 1st congressional district -- Travis Childers bucked last-minute intervention by Vice President Dick Cheney to win a seat the GOP had held, easily, since 1994. Cheney personally stumped on behalf of the Republican candidate, Greg Davis, on Monday.

Daily Polichicks - Wednesday
http://www.polichicksonline.com/2008/05/daily-polichicks-wed...And now heeeeeeeeeeeeere's your Daily Polichicks! (Cheers and applause) Campaign '08: A day late and a dollar short Hillary Clinton won the West Virginia primary Tuesday, but she's short on cash, delegates and time. Clinton and her camp says the race "isn't over yet," but some say (in their best Oprah voices), "Get real, peopllllllllle!" [Washington Post] and [Politico] Some politicians kiss babies; John McCain hugs trees. It's not easy being green, but John McCain is willing to do it to impress independent voters. [NPR] Also, you can pick up some fly gear from McCain new eco-concious line over here. Republicans kick ball into own goal. Democrats score big. Doh! Republicans unintentionally helped Democrat Travis Childers win a longtime Republican congressional seat by tying him to Barack Obama. [The Los Angeles Times] Is that your final answer? College superdelegates balance picking a candidate with final exams. [The Washington Post] The Sermon Police Commentator on faith warns of the sermon chop shop, where the media chops up sermons like theives chop cars. [On Faith] "Hang that darky from a tree!" Obama's campaign workers face mean-spiritness, racism and remarks that are beyond offensive. But luckily, they meet a lot of nice people too. (Nice people who vote for Obama.) [The Washington Post] What's up with John Edwards and his peeps? John Edwards and wife Elizabeth kiss and tell about what's cool (and not cool) about Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. And they do it to a tabloid publication! Juicy! [People] OMG! Emma Claire and Jack Edwards met Miley Cyrus, aka HANNAH MONTANA (!!!!) in line for the Test Trak ride at Disney Land. How cool is that?! The Mississippi 1st
http://tomcrawley.typepad.com/weblog/2008/05/the-mississippi...There was arguably an even more significant election result last night. In a congressional race in Mississippi*, Democrat Travis Childers beat Republican Greg Davis by four points. The important of this is that the district, much of which is an exurb of Memphis, had been thought to be reliably Republican; Bush received 60% of the vote in the district in 2004. This argues for it being a remarkably favourable year for Democrats. Even attempts to link Childers to Obama, and by extension to Jeremiah Wright, seem to have failed. Davis had released this ad: The Republicans are pretty shell-shocked: Former NRCC Chairman Tom Davis, the Virginia Republican who is retiring this year, seems to have largely given up on his party’s chances. “This is the floor,” Davis said, stopping his foot on the concrete. “We’re underneath it.” This bodes well for Obama in the autumn. * Essentially this was a by-election to fill an open House of Representatives seat vacated by a Republican incumbent who had moved up to the Senate.

If A Republican Can’t Win In Northern Mississippi, Then…
http://politics.nashvillepost.com/2008/05/14/if-a-republican...Last night, the Democratic Party captured its third straight victory this year in a special election for U.S. Congress. Democrat Travis Childers came away last night triumphant in a historically conservative district which routinely elects Republican Presidents and has been held by the GOP since 1994. Terry Frank argues that the loss can be chalked up to bad brand management: Republicans who have been losing their national brand name as the party of smaller government and low taxes, have relied on the very group they are often embarrassed of to propel them across finish lines: social conservatives. But as I’ve written about many times before, if a Democrat takes those issues from us, uh-oh….he can win. DaveG of Race42008 breaks down the general election impact: What all of this means is that the GOP is such a miserable party that it’s going to get blown out of the water this November, and that Barack Obama is such a miserable candidate that he’s going to get annihilated as well. That means that the most likely result of the race for 2008 will be President McCain and a heavily Democratic Congress.
