I'm bonkers about animals - big and small, furry and feathered, I love them all. When I was a child, I wanted to be a veterinarian. My mom helped nurture this passion in me. Despite her own aversion to creepy crawly creatures and naked rat tails (rats make wonderful pets - if you don't look too closely at the tail end), she allowed me to keep a growing menagerie caged in my bedroom. I incubated a chick once. My mom didn't squawk when she discovered I'd trained my hen to use the doggy door. My eleventh summer, mom sent me to camp. The first day I was so homesick that I begged her to come rescue me.
