State Sen. Yancey McGill: "Wicca isn't a religon."
http://www.wildhunt.org/ 2008/ 05/ state-sen-yancey-mcgill-wicca-isnt.html
Remember how I recently said that South Carolina is becoming a "hot zone" for battles over church and state? Well things aren't going to be cooling off any time soon. The Charlotte Observer, reporting on the various religious-oriented bills winding their way through the South Carolina Legislature, captures a rare moment of honesty from a supporter of the Christianity-only "I Believe" license plate. You see, as an elected official, I get to decide these things. "In South Carolina, Baptists wanted the tag on cars here and pitched the idea to Republican South Carolina Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer's chief of staff.

Repeating a Call to Action
http://alheithinn.blogspot.com/2008/05/repeating-call-to-act...Both Cosette (Pandora's Bazaar) and Jason (The Wild Hunt) have noted the remarks of Democratic Senator Yancey McGill of South Carolina who doesn't believe Wicca is a religion, according to statements made in the Charlotte Observer. I wanted to draw attention to this situation as well. Obviously, Senator McGill is wrong, and is being either willfully ignorant or is simply uninformed, though one would expect a Senator to have a little more knowledge of the subject than this. I am sure some of his constituents are Wiccans or practice other forms of Paganism. Obviously, we all have an interest in such assertions and we all stand to suffer from such expressions of intolerance. Senator McGill wants "Believer" license plates, which I'm sure the entire Pagan blogosphere has been discussing, but he wants to limit these to what he considers legitimate religions. He apparently is not even convinced Buddhists practice a legitimate religion.

Call to Action
http://pandorasbazaar.blogspot.com/2008/05/call-to-action.ht...Democratic Senator Yancey McGill of South Carolina doesn't believe Wicca is a religion. Everyone's entitled to their opinion, of course, but the issue at hand is not about opinions, it's about religious equality. South Carolina is one of the states looking to make the Christian "I Believe" license plate available. The Charlotte Observer reports that Sen. McGill thinks the tags are a great idea.
