Summer Professional Development Ideas
http://www.speedofcreativity.org/ 2008/ 05/ 01/ summer-professional-development-idea...
I have posted the following entry to the TechLearning blog, but am cross-posting here in case there are still commenting problems there. In that event, please comment here! For educators living in the northern hemisphere, summer is approaching fast. Today I had an opportunity to visit with about fifteen elementary teachers in a rural Oklahoma school, and the topics I was asked to address were: Internet Safety Wikis Blogs Less than one-third of the teachers in my presentation had high speed Internet access at their home currently, and none were acquainted with web 2.0 tools and websites.

A Short Post
http://bettybunhead.blogspot.com/2008/05/short-post.htmlI'm in St. Catharines, Ontario right now and I will be attending a meeting for the health and physical education part of my responsibilities. The Internet connection here is iffy tonight so I'll just post a few new items that I've harvested through the various blogs that I follow. For those of you who use Animoto, there is a new educator account that will allow you and your students to make videos longer than 30 seconds. Check it out here. There is a new wiki made by librarians in Florida that has links to various 2.0 tools called Web Tools 4u 2Use. It puts a number of Read Write web tools in one convenient space and since it's a wiki anyone can add to it as new tools become available. Here's a link to a wiki called 50 Web 2.0 Ways to Tell a Digital Story. It shows how to combine traditional writing with other media. The list of 2.0 tools is extensive. I like it because it emphasizes the planning and preparation that must go into the work before the publishing (something that students have a hard time understanding sometimes). Wes Fryer has a post on his Moving at the Speed of Creativity blog. It has ideas for summer professional learning. You can view his suggestions here. Most of this can be done from the comfort of your own home if you have a decent Internet connection (I don't have that great of an Internet plan but can still do most of the stuff I want except view video - takes forever to buffer). I'm still having problems with the connection so that's all I'll post.

Comment Challenge Day 2 - and I've already messed up!
http://edtechworkshop.blogspot.com/2008/05/comment-challenge...I always like to tell the kids I teach that I am a great mistake-maker! I want them to see that making mistakes isn't a bad thing...in fact it's a good thing as long as you learn from your mistakes (which I do try to do). So, it is in that spirit, that I report that I already seem to have lost track of what I am supposed to be doing with this comment challenge.Today is day 2, and the activity for today was to comment on a "new" blog, meaning one where you haven't before left a comment. That part was super-easy, as I read many great blogs but rarely comment. I left a comment on Wesley Fryer's post about ideas for summer professional development. Then, after I left my comment I realized that I was in safari and my cocomment tracker is only in my firefox browser. And I even blogged about that yesterday!oh well. Hopefully, I have learned from this little mistake and will remember to start tracking my comments. It's all part of the learning for me. And if you are part of The Comment Challenge remember to add the comment08 tag to your post.

Thoughts of Professional Development
http://tucksoon.wordpress.com/2008/05/02/thoughts-of-profess...From one of my favourite edublogs, Wesley Fryer’s Speed of Creativity: …Today I had an opportunity to visit with about fifteen elementary teachers in a rural Oklahoma school…Less than one-third of the teachers in my presentation had high speed Internet access at their home currently, and none were acquainted with web 2.0 tools and websites… As I looked at my school’s recent Internet usage survey, over 90% of my fellow school teachers had high speed Internet access at home. That is much higher than the figure of the rural Oklahoma school. However very few teachers in my school were acquainted with web 2.0 tools and websites based on my observation and conversation with them. I am sure some of the teachers have Friendster or Facebook accounts. I am also certain some of them have personal blogs. The problem is, only a handful of teachers are bringing the web technology into the classrooms. Why do I say that? There is a blog module in the school LMS. The good and bad news: Children are posting videos, journals and jokes, but in a rather haphazard manner without teachers’ moderation. The really bad news: Only a few teachers made use of it to teach (I must admit I am the only teacher in my school blogging ‘religiously’). I am not blaming my fellow teachers. In fact I cannot blame them at all because they are really competent educators. I think this situation can be improved by developing the mindset and skillset of teachers in terms of education technology. In other words, a professional development workshop like what Wesley did would be extremely beneficial! Question: Who is going to conduct the workshop? I wanted to, but I guess I really more time and exposure to get myself ready to inform and convince teachers who are way more experienced than me. Perhaps someone from ETD would be a more suitable candidant. Or should we get Wesley to fly to Singapore?
