    Happy Bloody Thursday!

    http://evrythngnythng.blogspot.com/2008/07/happy-bloody-thur...

The fourth was good. Got drunk the night before and went to this Belmar bar called Headliners. Very Jersey but weirdly empty. The worst part though was hearing about their dollar Heines and then orderigng a round without any delay and finding out that this is the only bar in the known universe that stops their specials when the day ends, meaning midnight. Bullshit. But thats the Jersey Shore for ya. The day of I went to the beach and played old man as my sister had invited lots of her friends + many tag-a-longs to crash in our ridiculously large house. After having dinner with my friend's family I started making margaritas and then walked to the Paramount Theatre in Asbury Park where there are not one, but two new bars. On the way we passed by a tractor that ahd been cleanign the beach and had fallen through the brand new boardwalk. The new bars were O'Tooles, an Irish pub/restaurant that was fun (the tenders were all our age and having fun) but there was no crowd. Then we went next door to The Beach Bar (what originality!) which was just as empty and more expensive but had the space & spot to kick off a great night. We stumbled home. I made another round of margaritas and drank it all myself while I ate leftovas and passed out. Well now I am back at work with still a tremendous headache from the tekillya. Hope to get back down tonight for some more. The members of RatDog and Gov’t Mule demonstrated their command of the classic-rock catalogue during their two-night run at San Diego, CA’s Humphrey's Concerts by the Bay. On Tuesday, RatDog’s Jeff Chimenti and Kenny Brooks kicked off the evening’s collaborations by sitting in with Gov’t Mule on “Turn On Your Lovelight,” shortly before Bob Weir and Mark Karan appeared with the group for takes on Bob Dylan’s "I Shall Be Released" and Neil Young’s "Cortez the Killer," respectively. During RatDog’s set, keyboardist Danny Louis returned the favor by appearing on a version of The Band’s “The Weight,” while Warren Haynes joined Weir and company on a run through Grateful Dead chestnuts like “Bird Song,” “He's Gone” and “Sugaree,” as well as Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode.” Last night’s performance also featured a hefty dose of cross-pollination. During Gov’t Mule’s performance, Karan emerged for “Nobody's Business But Mine,” Brooks played saxophone on “The Jealous Kind” and Weir and Chimenti made a joint appearance on “Death Don't Have No Mercy.” Later in the evening, Haynes sat in with RatDog once again, this time on “Tennessee Jed.” - Jambands.comSome great collaberations. I am impressed! I had no idea that the extra on Coldplay's X&Y album, Til Kingdom Come, was written for Johnny Cash. How cool! I also had no idea that Law & Order made a movie!?! I saw this feature the other day in the New York Times and was blown away by the originality of it. THE R68A subway car is shiny and modern-looking, with seats in two shades of orange — few of which can be glimpsed when the car is crowded. And the second-to-last R68A of the Q train that pulled out of DeKalb Avenue at 8:27 a.m. on Thursday felt near capacity. There would be no four-day holiday weekends, it seemed, for the 128 passengers in this car. As the train went over the Manhattan Bridge, few riders looked up from their books or newspapers or iPods or private thoughts or even their dreams to see, to the south, through the bridge’s riveted girders, the Statue of Liberty in the haze of a hot summer morning. Is it nearly impossible to take a single authoritative snapshot of New York City’s population, to freeze it in place, to discover and list all the different people who live here. Or were born here. Or who came here in search of success, or family, or to escape misery. Each block is different, from Park Avenue to Parkside Avenue, from the East Village to Eastchester — each is its own little city, with its own evolving ethnic mixture, its own traditions. But if there is no perfect way to take that snapshot, then there are certainly worse ways than to catalogue the people in that car of the 8:27 a.m. Q train in the middle of the Manhattan Bridge, to learn who they are, and how they happened to be there. And there are certainly worse days to publish it in the newspaper than the Fourth of July. And so six reporters and four photographers from The New York Times set out early on Thursday to capture the intricate human mosaic sharing one journey in one R68A, high above Brooklyn and Manhattan, with the skyscrapers and a little green statue out the windows. In all, 99 people were interviewed — not everyone in the car, but a large cross section of this captive population. In this proudly unscientific approach, riders were asked what they did for a living, where they were born, how long they had lived in New York. Some were interviewed in more depth. Twenty-nine were not interviewed, for various reasons, including four who were asleep. They were not disturbed. To look at all the homelands, all the ages, all the professions collected in that car is to see — as much as is possible — New York City in the summer of 2008, everyone traveling together across the Manhattan Bridge. - NYTimes.com They don't have the full article on the site but it was in the edition on the Fourth so if you can get a copy you should. Very cool idea to get a cross section of this amazing city. The New York Rangers dropped Jagr yesterday and now he has signed a two year deal with a team in the Russian hockey league. Will he ever hang up the skates? New developments at two east coast ski areas: Okemo: New ski trails, laser-guided superpipe cutting, first-in-the-East lift loading and grooming technologies, plus energy efficiencies in snowmaking and other operations are on tap for next winter at southern Vermont's Okemo ski and snowboard resort. Ninety-six percent of Okemo’s trails are equipped with snowmaking capabilities and 80 new HKD snowmaking guns will be added to the arsenal this year. Okemo’s operational focus this winter will be on energy-efficient, early-season snowmaking. Last winter, Okemo tested some new energy-efficient HKD guns. Featuring adjustable water flow levers, nozzle versatility and new valving technology, resort officials maintain that the HKD SV-10s and Genesis tower guns were a huge success. Due to the snowguns’ ability to make snow more efficiently at closer-to-freezing temperatures, Okemo was able to make the same amount of snow as in previous years using a reduced amount of energy and a fuel-cost savings of $140,000. When Okemo VP of Operations Barry Tucker and his crew were tasked with finding a more precise way to cut Okemo’s massive SoBe Superpipe, they found a technological solution that cost $50,000. “It simply wasn’t a $50,000 problem,” said Tucker. So with a heaping dose of Yankee ingenuity and a dash of frugality, the operations crew came up with a solution using the same laser technology they use in summertime construction-site grading projects. By affixing adjustable laser units with a vertical orientation to a stationary base at the bottom of the superpipe, and attaching a receptor device to the arm of the Zaug Pipe Monster, Okemo’s groomer operators can monitor superpipe shaping for better construction, upkeep and optimal vert, Tucker says. As a way to make that first lift ride of the day less stressful and safer, Okemo is installing mechanized loading and unloading carpets on one of its base area South Ridge fixed-grip quad chairs. Although familiar to European skiers, the loading carpet is a rarity in North America. Okemo’s loading carpet will be the first one in the East and the unloading carpet will be the first of its kind in the U.S. A conveyor belt, marked with lanes and moving in synch with the chairlift, will make loading and unloading easier and safer. Whiteface Whiteface Mountain staffers are getting little rest over the summer months as they prepare for a new ski lift and trails in the Upstate New York ski area's new Lookout Mountain development. Work continues preparing Lookout Mountain's long intermediate trail that will enable skiers and riders to continue to the base lodge or Kids Kampus. The two mile-long trail is located in the new terrain pod east of the Slides, and will be served by a triple chairlift starting on the Easy Street trail. The Kooks cover Coldplay's "Violet Hill" Pineapple Express Video Game! Tilly & The Wall is a new band that I have discovered that has a very catchy name (it sounds like a childrens fable) and has very cool songs which implore the use of stomping & clamping and womens voices and sound very good. Love their new take on percussion. Check them out. Dwayne Wade just became the spokesman for... Happy 4th from the Muppets. Love the Bear doin the bass. • Shaun Shuisham does not have a foot of the Gods. • Chris Snyder's broken ball. Ow. • Drew Magary: Editor-at-Large • Dwyane Wade would not like you to buy this product. • A-Rod's having a tough week. • Euro 2008: Hooray for Spain! • Fucking Favre. • Gimelstob: This man should probably stop talking for a little while. • Awful Announcing has replaced coffee. • Olympic Mascots are scary • Red Sox Nation salutes all of you. The weekend: You're all off of the hook. Thank you very much for all of those who volunteerd this weekend (all 89 of you, sheesh), but as it turns out, it will not be necessary. Go outside and live a little. That's what I plan on doing. But all of those who did send an email will be considered for the permanent weekend editor slots to be announced late next week. If something earth-shattering does happen, I'll be sure to put it up. Right now, barring a choking death at the Nathan's Hot Dog eating contest or Alex Rodriguez jumping in the stands to feel-up Madonna, it won't happen. Turn off your computers, for once. Be back here on Monday to haze the crap out of Clay Travis, the new guy. Things will get up to speed soon — promise. Rick and I thank you for your continued patience. Happy 4th. Start drinkin'.
