Powerset is cool, but will mom, dad, grandma, and grandpa use it?

The buzz tonight (Sunday) is about the launch of Powerset the new semantic search engine that is showing us that Wikipedia really does have good information to offer. Limited to just Wikipedia for now, Powerset is more of a technology showcase than a

R U ready for the sematic web?

    http://bernyblog.wordpress.com/2008/05/12/r-u-ready-for-the-...

From GigaOm: …Powerset, a San Francisco-based contextual-semantic search engine has finally launched. … it is currently limited to searching Wikipedia along with some supplementary results from Metaweb’s Freebase. I think it has made Wikipedia much easier to use. … Danny Sullivan over on Search Engine Land has an elaborate and fantastic indepth review of Powerset. From howstuffworks: Instead of multiple searches, you might type a complex sentence or two in your Web 3.0 browser, and the Web will do the rest. In our example, you could type “I want to see a funny movie and then eat at a good Mexican restaurant. What are my options?” The Web 3.0 browser will analyze your response, search the Internet for all possible answers, and then organize the results for you. From Wired Magazine: … the truth is, sometimes social connections are less useful than semantic ones. … I spent a couple of days shoving megabytes of my favorite stuff into it, and soon it was recommending amazingly on-target links. Twine figured out that I was interested in guitar gear and hooked me up with other musicians and the things they had found. It learned that I was into robots and began slipping me cool robotics sites. It’s a weird and pleasant feeling — having that assistant do your surfing and sifting for you. … Our information overload isn’t going away; our forest of bookmarks gets thicker by the day. To find our way, we’ll need a Web that can organize itself.

    Powerset is mildly interesting

Powerset has done a great job of generating buzz for it’s version of smart search. That said, its current demo is mediocre — and that’s being polite. Powerset currently indexes little more than just Wikipedia, and the quality of its search results is about comparable to that of Wikipedia’s justly reviled internal search engine. To determine this, I did searches on both sites on five strings. Wikipedia typically had more total junk ranking higher, but it also put the very best hits of all higher than Powerset did. The strings were: Drosophila research Bill Clinton foreign policy Home run hitters Innocents on death row Text data mining Powerset does have a nice set of UI features in terms of automatic faceted search and so on, but these days who doesn’t? Some discussion of Powerset: Michael Arrington seems impressed with Powerset Dan Farber thinks Microsoft may be impressed Vanessa Fox definitely isn’t VentureBeat is taking a wait and see attitude So is Om Malik, who notes that Powerset performance is a bear
