The Map Room closes its doors
http://music.ccpblogs.com/ 2008/ 05/ 13/ the-map-room-closes-its-doors/
Some sad news hit the office this week: West Ashley music venue and bar The Map Room is halting operations and shutting its doors this Friday, May 16*.Located in the Village Square Shopping Center at 1650 Sam Rittenberg Blvd. in West Ashley, the venue has mixed it up with a wild variety of live rock, blues, jazz, and pop music four-to-five nights a week. They also featured weekly trivia and karaoke nights, DJ dance nights, hip-hop concerts, open mic events, and occasional theatrical performances.“It was weird — over the last few months, people just stopped coming out,” says manager, co-owner, and main booking dude Ryan Brown.

Sound Forged Like Spine
http://silenceisoverrated.blogspot.com/2008/05/sound-forged-...In addition to having one of the best titles for a song I've heard in a long time (re: the blog post title), The Winter Sounds are one of those bands that hold the coveted spot in my library of "repeat player." Seldom few albums make it to this spot and the ones that do are in good company--"Destroyer's Rubies" by Destroyer, "Fort Recovery" by Centro-matic, "Blue Screen Life" by Pinback, etc. The Winter Sounds' debut full length, "Porcelain Empire" has that brilliant quality of suiting every mood during any given week of the year. I'm not sure what a sound forged like (out of?) spine would sound like, but I bet The Winter Sounds' know exactly what it is. And they know how to recreate it from scratch every night. I was fortunate enough to catch them at Charleston's latest (and so far divey-ist, in a good way) bar, The Tin Roof. For a Monday night, these guys and gal weren't phoning it in and I enjoyed every minute of it--from the $1.50 PBRs to the stage left exit at around midnight. I'll definitely be back...especially now that The Map Room has closed its doors. (Sniff.) It would be easy to dismiss The Winter Sounds as just another pop band from Athens, GA but there is so much more to discover with this band. And you can almost rest assured they will come play a city near you. Check out their MySpace page and listen to samples. The Winter Sounds website. More photos of the band at my Flickr site Visit The Tin Roof's MySpace page to see upcoming shows.

No More Map Room
http://www.catcityonline.com/2008/05/no-more-map-room.htmlAlthough the movie theatre at Citadel Mall has won a reprieve - the ex-AMC concern has been taken over by a regional company - another West Ashley entertainment mecca is closing its doors today. The Map Room on Sam Rittenburg Blvd blames low attendance numbers, high gas prices, Charleston's smoking ban and the economy on its dwindling profits. So it's pulled the plug. You can read the full story on the City Paper website. The Map Room's a short walk from my house, and it's best known to me as an alternative art venue (hosting group shows of underground artists), a film and theatre space (for example, Theatre/verv performed there, and the Star Wars short Volition premiered there as well). Most of all it was a music venue. A cap to my birthday party was a show by Southern Culture on the Skids at The Map Room. I didn't go - I was busy bursting out of a cake, or the other way round - but my pals did. A good time was had by all. We'll miss you, Map Room.

Charleston looses another venue for independent music.
http://lowcountryvoice.com/?p=17The management of The Map Room have decided to close their doors. A full story on this can be found here. I’ve always enjoyed checking out local and touring independent bands at this club and the staff was fun and friendly. Hopefully they will be back in some fashion soon.
