The Mets have announced RHP Nelson Figueroa and Jorge Sosa have been Designated for assignment. The Mets have also placed OF Angel Pagan on the 15-day disabled list with a injured shoulder. In their place the Mets have recalled RHP Claudio Vargas, RHP Matt Wise and OF/IF Fernando Tatis. â¦good to see the Mets make the correct moves and field their best possible 25-man rosterâ¦i'm also happy to see Joe Smith stay with the major league club, he has pitched well and didn't deserve a demotion⦠ShareThis

Sosa, Figueroa Designated
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2008/05/sosa-figueroa-d.htmlThe Mets designated pitchers Nelson Figueroa and Jorge Sosa for assignment today. Figueroa, a 34 year-old journeyman, provided a few decent starts but seems to have stopped fooling people. Sosa was just terrible; the Mets will have to swallow his $2MM sal

Sosa and Figueroa DFA’d by Mets
http://mlbfleecefactor.com/2008/05/13/sosa-and-figueroa-dfad...According to Metsblog.com, the Mets have designated pitchers Jorge Sosa and Nelson Figueroa for assignment. Figueroa did a nice job for New York spot starting while Pedro Martinez is out. Even though he posted a 5.12 ERA in 6 starts, the Mets won 3 of the 6 games in which he started. Sosa has been a nightmare out of the bullpen. He has given up two grand slams, and posted an ERA over 7.00. Matt Wise was activated, and Claudio Vargas’ contract was purchased from AAA to take their spots on the roster. The Mets have also placed outfielder Angel Pagan on the disabled list, while recalling veteran Fernando Tatis. Back-up catcher Raul Casanova has cleared waivers, and will report to AAA. ShareThis

Mea culpa
http://crankycon.politicalbear.com/2008/05/13/mea-culpa/Sorry, Omar, but it looks like he did the right thing in the end. The Mets have DFA’d Sosa and Fiugeuroa, leaving Smith up with the big club. That’s the right way to go.

Nelson Figueroa Is A Classy Whiner
http://www.fedorafreakflicks.com/natsnq/?p=376Mets Suck, originally uploaded by psuturtle2005. The NQ is about to head back to headquarters but we wanted to get this out after the Nats big 10-4 win over Team Choke East Last night. The newly appointed Nats Beat Writer God, Chico Harlen, over at the Washington Post wrote a great article covering the game, hitting everything from the garbage ridden litterbox that is Shea Stadium to the garbage that is Team Choke East. Showing amazing professionalism and undisputed class, Choke pitcher Nelson Figueroa who gave up four earned runs, hit two batters, and had one throwing error during the game, immediately ran to the media and had this to say: “They were cheerleading in the dugout like a bunch of softball girls,” Figueroa said. “I’m a professional just like anybody else. I take huge offense to that. If that’s what a last-place team needs to do to fire themselves up, so be it. They could show a little more class, a little more professionalism now that they won tonight, but in the long run, they’re still who they are.” The first question you have to ask about this is: Who is Nelson Figueroa? Yeah, like you, I really have no answer. He is a nobody. The second question you ask: Is Team Choke East really trying to come out and tutor some other team on class? That works. That works as well as having Tony Romo teach a singing class. Maybe this Figueroa fellow needs to point the finger in another direction. Maybe he should point the finger at the fact that Team Choke East has decrepit dinosaurs playing on their team like Moises Alou who just let a fly ball drop in last night. Maybe he should look at the FO who with the help of Omar Minaya has all but stripped that team of prospects and future and has put Team Choke in a pressure filled “must win” situation this year. Because if they don’t, they are going to continue to choke for the next five years at least. Or maybe Little Miss Nelson Figueroa should turn the mirror on himself and just suck it up and admit he blew it, he couldn’t handle the pressure, and he let a little clapping in the opposing team’s dugout get to him. You know, like all true professionals do. UPDATE: Figueroa is professional no more. Moved down into the sewer of Team Choke’s system. READ HERE.

frankly, i am stunned.
http://smearthequeer.wordpress.com/2008/05/13/frankly-i-am-s...Today has been a frenzy of Joe Smith v. Jorge Sosa debate in Mets land, with the overwhelming consensus from bloggers and beat writers being that young Smith’s sparkling performance deserved a place on the team while Sosa and his $2 million ineffective slider special should be cut. The presumed reality–even amongst Smith and his teammates–saw the Mets keeping Sosa and his contract in favor of Smith and his options, so as not to risk losing Sosa. This sparked lots of upset and angry opinions from Mets fans. And to be sure, I was all set to join the fracas and portray my disgust and confusion and bile. As soon as it happened. And is it turned out, it didn’t. Glad to not add to that shitstorm. But I’m shocked and overjoyed to see that the Mets made the right decision, that they favored performance above money, solid youth over ruined experience, results over the hypothetical. For once, at least, we can’t complain about a front office decision.
