Aloe vera is a plant best known for its medicinal properties. It is most commonly used as a topical salve to soothe and disinfect burns. It is sometimes used to speed the healing of open wounds, though there is no proof that this works. Other medicinal uses include improving blood glucose levels in diabetics, and treating dogs and cats with cancer.
Aloe vera is also a very popular ingredient in cosmetics, skin care, and body care products: lip balms, body moisturizers, and face serums. It is said to be moisturizing and calming to the skin, though scientific data backing up these claims are generally contradictory.
While aloe vera's natural origins are not known precisely, largely because it can grow almost anywhere. It is thought to have first appeared in North Africa.
