Autism blogging is intensely political, with well-known champions, stark realities, high personal stakes and the great risk of collateral awareness.
Many sources cite a statistic of 1 in 150 to 1 in 160 as being the prevalence of autism most often by people who are seeking government funding, donations or otherwise wishing to convey urgency and importance. There is little or no agreement as to what this information means, even less about what should be done in terms of public policy.
This tension has resulted in some of the most interesting and important writing in the blogosphere, with impacts that have reverberated within science and Mental Health Policy debates within the United States, Canada and The United Kingdom.
