Canadian pop princess Avril Lavigne was born on September 27, 1984 in Napanee, Ontario. Avril Lavigne started singing at the age of ten, and in 1998, she won a local talent competition and performed a duet alongside country music star Shania Twain. She was signed by Artista Records three years later.
Avril Lavigne exploded onto the music scene in the summer of 2002 with her wildly successful debut album Let Go. With worldwide sales in excess of 16 million, the album spawned such radio-friendly hit singles as "Complicated" and "Sk8er Boi." While Avril Lavigne's vocal range and high-energy musical style has brought her comparisons ranging from Alanis Morissette to Pink, she has been adamant in positioning herself as an artist who runs counter to the mainstream.
In 2004, Avril Lavigne released her sophomore album Under My Skin. She followed that up in 2007 with The Best Damn Thing.
The consummate entertainer, Avril Lavigne branched out into the world of acting in the 2006 animated film Over the Hedge. She has since appeared in flicks like Fast Food Nation (2006) and The Flock (2007). She represented Canada at the closing ceremonies of the 2006 winter Olympics in Turin, Italy.
