Brooklyn is the largest of the five boroughs of New York City, and is situated across the East River from Manhattan. Settled by the Dutch in the 17th century, and named for the Dutch town Breuckelen ("Broken Woods"), Brooklyn was an independent city until amalgamation with New York in 1898.
Brooklyn has always had a special character distinct from New York. It is known for its ethnic neighborhoods, its vibrant art scene, and the blocks of Victorian brownstone houses and churches. Brooklyn Heights was home to many literary people such as Thomas Wolfe and Walt Whitman, who captured their own particular Brooklyns in prose and poetry, just as people continue to do today.
There is a vibrant Brooklyn blog community. Some blogs focus on life in Brooklyn today and on all the facets of its present. There are also blogs specific to particular Brooklyn neighborhoods such as Fort Greene, Gowanus and Williamsburg. Still other blogs explore Brooklyn's rich past. There are as many Brooklyn places to visit online as there are real corners of this fascinating place.
