Burning Man is an annual art festival and social experiment that takes place in the Black Rock Desert in northwest Nevada. First dreamed up in 1986, the Burning Man festival has become an internationally-recognized phenomenon: one week a year, tens of thousands of "burners" (including some well-known bloggers) descend upon the desert, creating a massive, art-centric city known as Black Rock City.
The influence of Burning Man extends deep into the art world, and it is well-known in creative and liberal circles. Despite a general distrust of the event by many groups who disapprove of the casual drug use, nudity and promiscuity practiced by some members, the Burning Man organization continues to grow and spread its culture of participation, gifting, and radical tolerance. Further bucking any negative reputation, the event maintains a "Leave No Trace" ethic, taking place on protected federal land, and committing to leave the grounds spotless after its post-event playa restoration phase.
You can find a multitude of blog posts tagged "burning man" directly after the end of each event (roughly the first week of September). But related posts, and fantastic photos, are posted daily by participants who, almost without exception, can't wait to get back to the playa for next year's event.
