Chat rooms are online services that allow users to chat with other people over the Internet through textual messages. A few years back chat rooms carried a certain stigma but times have changed and they're now mainstream as people have used them and usually found like minded people similar to themselves.
By their nature you can never be certain of the identity of the other users in chat rooms and so a certain caution is always required. For this reason it is usually recommended that chat rooms should only be used by minors with adult supervision.
Chat rooms are often about a certain topic or interest, this helps break the ice as it immediately gives the users a shared interest and topic of conversation.
The majority of chat rooms are still text based with simple emoticons or smilies although there are now an increasing number of graphical chat rooms and 3D virtual worlds that serve the same purpose of allowing a group of people to communicate together in real time.
