What is Christmas without Santa, Gifts and Christmas cards? Christmas cards have been around since 1843 when Sir Henry Cole of London commissioned one. He had also introduced the Penny Post three years earlier. There has been a steady decline in the number of Christmas Cards sent out through snail mail in recent years. However, the number is still close to 2 billion cards a year.
Official Christmas cards started going out in the 1840s and in 1953 US President Dwight D Eisenhower sent out the first official White House Christmas card. During his years as president, George W. Bush sent out over 1 million Christmas Cards. However, sending Christmas cards is a costly endevour for us mere mortals.
A whole new genre of Christmas cards started in the late 1990s when the internet and email became popular. And there are many websites dedicated to Christmas Ecards. Some of the most popular ones are American Greetings and Hallmark who also have large print presence. However, the advent of ecards has inevitably led to christmas card spam.
