Coffee is a beverage brewed from the beans of a plant from one of several species of the Coffea genus, a small evergreen tree or bush grown worldwide, but originally native to subtropical Africa. Coffee beans are the seeds of the plant, which is widely cultivated in tropical regions worldwide.
It is thought that coffee has been consumed as a beverage since the ninth century, originally in Ethiopia and then spreading outward from that region geographically over time. From those origins coffee has now become one of the most popular beverages worldwide. Coffee naturally contains caffeine, a mild stimulant.
Most cultivated coffee today comes from Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Africa via fair trade agreement. When ripe, the berries are picked, processed, and dried. Roasting the seeds to varying degrees then gives them the characteristic flavor the coffee processor desires.
Coffee can be prepared in several ways. Roasted coffee beans must first be ground, which most commonly is done for prepackaged sale, though many consumers enjoy buying high quality beans and grinding them just before brewing. Coffee drinkers enjoy blogging about their favorite beverage, and discuss everything from brewing methods to the health benefits of coffee.
Many specialty coffee preparations exist such as espresso and latte. Coffee has been a social beverage throughout the ages and is now served in many types of venues worldwide. It is also a major commodity cash crop for nations that grow it and is traded on major financial center commodity exchanges as well.
