Coffee shop is a popular term used to describe a small restaurant typically selling light refreshments with the main item on the menu being multiple variations of coffee, often complimented by sweet snacks.
The known origins of the coffee shop or house date back to 1475 A.D. in Constantinople, Turkey. When Turkey invaded Austria in the next century, coffee shops first got a toehold in Europe and then spread throughout Europe and then much later to the Americas.
Coffee shops come in many types, but the basics of a coffee shop are that the shop serves coffee and/or some other form like espresso or latte, that coffee is the main focus of the establishment, that coffee is made fresh throughout the day, and that a limited amount of food that goes well with coffee is also served.
The coffee shop is now more popular than ever, with an estimated 15,000 coffee shops in the U.S. by 2010. Fifteen percent of Americans buy at least one cup of coffee at a coffee shop every day. Coffee shops range from small mom and pop shops, to the hip style shops where literature, poetry and music are the theme, to the modern franchises like Starbucks.
