The last part of the body’s digestive tract in most vertebrates is the colon. The purpose of the colon is to extract water and salts from the solid waste before they are eliminated from the body.
The colon is made up of four sections: the ascending colon, the traverse colon, the descending colon and the sigmoid colon. The colon along with the rectum, the final section before the anus; make up the large intestine.
Most cancers of the colon and rectum are thought to begin from polyps or tumors. Tumors of the colon and rectum begin in the inner walls of the intestine and are usually detected during a colonoscopy.
Blogs on colon care, colorectal cancer and colon cleansing are prevalent on the internet. Many blogs are strong proponents of colon cleansing through the use of water, herbs or chemicals; while others indicate that there is no evidence to support the use of colon cleansing and that it can actually be dangerous if not done properly.
The Health.com website has a blog on colon health; it provides general information on preventing colon cancer and staying healthy.
