Colon cleansing refers to a number of alternative medical therapies intended to remove fecal waste and toxins from the colon and intestinal tract. Colon cleansing may use a commercial product, or water (colon hydrotherapy or colonic irrigation) to cleanse the colon.
Colon cleansing with hydrotherapy uses enemas to inject water, sometimes with herbs or other liquids into the colon using an enema bag with a tube and nozzle attached.
Oral colon cleansing uses fibre, laxatives, herbs and dietary supplements to stimulate the cleansing process. The colon cleansing concept is based upon medical beliefs of the Ancient Egyptians and Greeks but is not currently supported by the general medical community.
There are many bloggers who commonly report successes with this method. However it is important to understand that the idea of colon cleansing as a supportive method for weight loss has become popular, driving many people to blog on the subject in order to sell various commercial products.
There is no current scientific evidence to support the efficacy of a colon cleanse. Some Physicians in fact believe that it can lead to the destruction of essential digestive bacteria and make the patient more prone to illness.
