A Conspiracy Theory by definition involves speculation about an event, or a series of events, where people or agencies may have acted in concert to achieve results which vary from the official version of the same event. The stories draw attention and fascination as the circumstances surrounding them are often themselves shrouded in mystery.
Some conspiracy theories offer revisionist views of documented historical events, such as the events of 9/11 or the assassinations of John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King, while others purpose alternative explanations for unknown phenomena like the purported crash of a UFO in Roswell, New Mexico.
A conspiracy theory will often go hand in hand with stories of a government coverup, with many conspiracies focusing on nefarious worldwide agencies like the Illuminati or the New World Order.
Needless to say, conspiracy theories are thriving in abundance in the blogosphere, with numerous websites devoted to the various stories out there, as well as an equal number of sites that specialize in debunking or shooting down conspiracy theories.
