Core Strength describes the strength of the abdominal, pelvic floor, gluteal, and back muscles that support the lower back and pelvic girdle. Pilates teachers call this the Powerhouse of strength. The concept of core strength has changed how fitness professionals approach training over the past decade.
Traditional abdominal exercises and weight machines do not in fact build the core strength needed for good physical function as they focus too much on extrinsic muscle power and not on stabilization. Core strength is in fact necessary to spinal health and stability as well as good all around functional strength.
